Limestone County occupies the northern tier of Alabama, with Athens as its county seat. The 39th Judicial Circuit serves the county through a court system that includes the Circuit Court, District Court, Probate Court, and two municipal courts. The Circuit Clerk’s Office at the Limestone County Courthouse operates as the official record keeper for all proceedings in the Circuit and District Courts, maintaining files across ten divisions — civil, criminal, domestic, child support, traffic, juvenile, and warrants, among others. The Probate Court, housed separately in the Clinton Street Courthouse Annex, manages estate administration, guardianships, conservatorships, adoptions, real property recordings, and marriage certificates.

Are Court Records Public in Limestone County?
Alabama law presumes that government records, including court records, are open to public inspection. Under the Alabama Open Records Act (Code of Alabama § 36-12-40), every citizen has the right to inspect and take a copy of any public writing. Court filings, orders, judgments, and docket entries in Limestone County’s Circuit, District, and Probate Courts generally fall within this right of access.
There are, however, important exceptions. The following records are typically not available for public inspection:
- Sealed records — A judge may order a case file sealed. Once sealed, the record is inaccessible without a subsequent court order.
- Juvenile records — Proceedings involving minors in the juvenile division of the District Court are confidential by Alabama statute.
- Adoption records — Files related to adoptions of minors handled through the Probate Court are sealed and not available to the general public.
- Records containing sensitive personal information — Social Security numbers, financial account details, and similar data may be redacted from publicly available records.
- Grand jury proceedings — Testimony and deliberations before a grand jury are secret under Alabama law.
The Limestone County Archives, located at 102 West Washington Street in Athens, also holds historical government records — including older court cases, deeds, marriages, wills, and tax records — dating back to the county’s formation in 1818. Most of these archival records are available for public research, and many are indexed through the Archives’ online Master Index.
