How Do I Look Up Warrants in Alabama?
AlabamaCourts.us is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the FCRA and does not provide consumer reports. All searches conducted on AlabamaCourts.us are subject to the Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.
You can use AlabamaCourts.us to locate a warrant in Alabama, as it compiles publicly available information reported by Alabama's courts and law enforcement agencies into a single search. A search may reveal the warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail or bond amount, when available.
Alabama has 67 counties, each operating its own sheriff's office and circuit court clerk independently. The state does not maintain a single, free, public-facing warrant database. Instead, criminal case data is spread across county-level systems and the subscription-based Alacourt Access portal, which charges per-case fees and is designed primarily for attorneys and professional researchers. For someone who simply needs to check whether a warrant has been issued in their name or a family member's name, navigating that patchwork is a real obstacle.
That fragmentation is what makes a consolidated search especially useful in Alabama. A warrant issued in a rural county like Choctaw or Wilcox may never appear on a public-facing website at all, even though the underlying record is legally accessible. AlabamaCourts.us bridges that gap by pulling available warrant data into one interface, regardless of which county issued it.
Are Warrants Public Information in Alabama?
Arrest warrants and bench warrants are generally public records in Alabama once they have been executed or once the underlying case is part of the court file. Alabama's public records statute, Code of Alabama § 36-12-40, grants every citizen the right to inspect and copy any "public writing" held by a government office, unless a specific statutory exemption applies. The language is broad — it covers records maintained by courts, clerks, and law enforcement alike — but the statute only guarantees the right of inspection, not proactive online publication.
That distinction matters in practice. A bench warrant issued under Code of Alabama § 15-10-60 for failure to appear before a grand jury indictment, or an arrest warrant issued under § 15-7-4, is part of the court record and is not typically sealed. Search warrants, by contrast, are almost always sealed during an active investigation and may remain so indefinitely if no charges are filed. Warrants tied to sealed juvenile proceedings or grand jury proceedings are likewise withheld from public access.
Even for records that are legally public, availability varies dramatically by county. Some Alabama sheriff's offices publish active warrant lists on their websites or Facebook pages; many do not. The Alacourt system covers all 67 counties' trial court records but requires registration and payment, and its records reflect court filings rather than real-time warrant status. A record can be entirely public under § 36-12-40 and still be functionally invisible to someone searching online.
How to Search for a Warrant in Alabama
- Use AlabamaCourts.us. Our Instant Warrant Lookup presents you with warrant record data compiled from available public resources in one convenient search. When available, you can find warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail/bond amount, among other details, depending on the record type and issuing county.
- Search Alabama's court records portal directly. The state's official system, Alacourt Access, provides on-demand access to criminal, civil, domestic, and traffic records from all state trial courts. The service charges a base fee per case retrieved, plus $5.00 for the first 20 pages of any document and $0.50 per page thereafter. Name searches and case number searches are both available, but Alacourt Access is a case records system — it does not function as a dedicated warrant lookup. You may find warrant information embedded within a criminal case file, but there is no warrant-specific search filter. A separate subscription service, Alacourt.com, offers broader access for higher-volume users such as attorneys and bail bond agents.
- Call the county sheriff's office or clerk of court. Have the subject's full legal name, date of birth, and the county where the warrant may have originated. Most Alabama sheriff's offices will confirm or deny the existence of an active warrant over the phone. Some counties, including Jefferson and Madison, also publish inmate rosters and active warrant lists on their department websites.
- Visit in person. The circuit clerk's office in the county where the case originated can provide access to the court file. Be aware that if you are inquiring about a warrant in your own name and one is active, presenting yourself at a law enforcement facility may result in your immediate arrest.
- Retain an attorney. A licensed Alabama attorney can contact the clerk's office or district attorney on your behalf and make a discreet inquiry without exposing you to arrest risk. An attorney can also file a motion to recall or quash a warrant if appropriate grounds exist.
How Long Is a Warrant Active in Alabama?
Arrest warrants and bench warrants in Alabama do not expire. Under Alabama Rules of Criminal Procedure, Rule 3.3, an arrest warrant may be executed by any law enforcement officer anywhere within the state, with no time limit on execution. A bench warrant issued under § 15-10-60 remains active until the court recalls it or the defendant appears. Search warrants are the exception: Code of Alabama § 15-5-12 requires that a search warrant be executed and returned to the issuing judge within 10 days of its date, after which it is void. Alabama does not have a statutory mechanism for automatic warrant expiration on arrest or bench warrants — recall requires a motion to the court or, in some cases, voluntary surrender and rebooking.
Alabama Warrant Records by County
Warrants in Alabama are issued and maintained at the county level. Each of the state's 67 counties has its own sheriff's office responsible for executing warrants and its own circuit clerk who maintains the court file. Alabama does not operate a free, centralized, statewide warrant database accessible to the public. The Alacourt system consolidates court records but is not a warrant-specific resource and requires payment. As a result, a thorough warrant search in Alabama often requires contacting individual counties directly.
